Foreign visitors recorded a 6.7 per cent increase, with 51.42 million overnight stays. By contrast, it is noted that there is a 2.3 per cent decrease in overnight stays by resident guests compared to the previous year, totalling 20.87 million. Furthermore, this year’s current summer season, May to September, has witnessed a 2.6 per cent increase when compared to the same period pre-COVID-19. These figures align with the expectations, considering that Austria saw 8.23 million overnight stays in May of this year alone. As data show, Austria recorded 12.24 million overnight stays in its accommodation establishments in September of this year. This reflects a five per cent increase compared to the previous year and is the highest September figure ever recorded since 1991, surpassing the 12.15 million in 1991 and 12.14 million in 1992.
As the penultimate month of the tourist summer season, September this year truly presented itself in a very summer-like manner. In the warmest September in recorded history, tourism also achieved a new September record with 12.24 million overnight stays in Austrian hotels, pensions, and vacation rentals. Of these, 70 per cent of the overnight stays in September 2023 were attributed to foreign guests.
Among the 12.24 million overnight stays in Austria’s accommodation establishments, foreign guests accounted for 8.57 million overnight stays, reflecting a 7.4 per cent increase compared to last year. On the other hand, domestic guests amounted to 3.66 million overnight stays, indicating a decrease of 0.2 per cent. Regarding the guests’ nationalities, the data reveals that in September of this year, guests from Germany increased their overnight stays by 1.8 per cent, reaching 5.15 million. Also, countries like Switzerland and Liechtenstein saw a significant 6.1 per cent increase, with a total of 407.9 million overnight stays. Moreover, in the first nine months of this year, there were 125.9 million overnight stays, which reflects an increase of 11.6 per cent from last year and only a 0.2 per cent decrease from the pre-pandemic levels when Austrian accommodation establishments recorded 126.73 million stays.
