The plans were lodged in May by Durham property firm Kans and Kandy.

The hotel's look

Boardwalk's exterior design will feature a brass laser-cut front door, brass window frames and glass-mounted, illuminated menu boards. Plans showing the design of the front of the building show the words "hotel", "brasserie" and "terrace studios" on its windows. LED lights will be used to illuminate the front of the building on Collingwood Street, which is colloquially known as the Diamond Strip.

Newcastle City Council approved the plans on Monday subject to a number of conditions. These include a construction plan being approved by the council to "ensure there is no detrimental impact on the highway" during the development. Plans had previously been put forward by High Street Group, the company behind Newcastle's Hadrian's Tower, to turn the building into the Metropolitan House Hotel. The plans were scrapped when the company entered administration in August 2021.
